My Years as a Background Vocalist

One of the questions I get asked a lot, is  about how I ended up as a background singer on tours. In a nutshell, here’s how the story goes.

While I was living in Ft. Collins, Colorado, a  concert  promoter friend of mine, had been booking CCM artists such as David Meece and Amy Grant, for shows . She had  booked David, at Red Rocks Amphitheater, for a show one summer. At the show, which I attended, she found out that David was planning a tour for the fall and he was looking for background singers. So she took me backstage after the show, and introduced me to David. He was willing to give me a shot to audition. So I borrowed a guitar and auditioned for him right then and there. He was very encouraging and said he was interested in the possibility of having me sing on his fall tour. He wanted me to audition for his management that would be with an artist recording at Caribou Ranch. That artist was Amy Grant. She was there recording her first Christmas record.

I drove up to Caribou Ranch and did my second audition for Amy’s management. They liked my voice and encouraged me to keep singing, but weren’t sure if it made sense to bring someone in from outside the Nashville area, since background vocalists are practically growing on trees there! Never the less, I was still very encouraged by the whole thing.

Several months passed by and I found out from my promoter friend that they wanted me to come to Nashville and start rehearsals for David Meece.  About two weeks later I was on the road with David and White Heart. While on the road on that first tour, I decided to move to Nashville and take the plunge into the music scene. I was in town for about a week when I was asked to audition for the “Straight Ahead Tour.” That was the first time I met Amy. I auditioned singing harmony with her on one of her songs. I was told a couple of days later, that I got the gig, A week later we went into rehearsals. A month later, I was out on the road, on the “Straight Ahead” tour.

I’ve continued to sing with many other artists both in the CCM arena as well as pop and country even, including Alex Harvey (Delta Dawn, Reuben James, etc.) Chris Eddy (songwriter for Lynyrd Skynyrd, bassist w/ Shelby Lynne), Greg Barnhill (hit country songwriter). I’ve enjoyed all of the work I’ve done as a background vocalist on the road and in the studio.

Here’s a list of tours and artists I’ve done background vocal work for on the road:

David Meece and White Heart Tour
David Meece Australia Tour
Candle in the Rain Tour

Amy Grant
Straight Ahead
Unguarded
Heart in Motion

Song Blog-See The Light

Over the next few weeks we’re going to blog about why, how, where, etc., we wrote the songs on Life So Far. Here’s the first one.

See the Light

As one friend of ours had some serious health concerns and another we hadn’t seen, went through a public divorce, we looked at our own lives and were disappointed with the loss we had experienced from bad choices as well as some things that had happened out of our control and we felt moved to write about it.

What is it about human nature which keeps us from making changes in our lives until we have the rug pulled out from under us or hit the wall and find our lives in shambles? Is it complacency, or thinking that we can bounce bullets off our chest like Superman? These are complicated questions that don’t necessarily have a “one size fits all” answer. We all make choices in our lives that take us down different paths and sometimes, circumstances just head us in unplanned directions. This is one of those paradoxes that we all face from time to time.

I’ve always believed that learning life’s lessons the easy way, that is, from seeing other people’s mistakes and avoiding them, is the way to live. Unfortunately, that’s not been the way I’ve learned the most; it’s been more bumps and bruises than smooth sailing, as they say. The real test isn’t whether we get out of the consequences of our mistakes without a scratch, but what we do and learn through the consequences. It’s learning that mistakes can be the places and times where we find out what didn’t work and we at the least, aren’t deceived by living in denial of something true about who we are and how life works.

If we, can learn this lesson, we truly will See The Light. Go over to the BlissBliss Store and download the song or full project or buy a CD, if this inspired you!

“See The Light” Goes to Radio!

The long and short of it, is that Lang has a long time friend in very successful jazz artist Mindi Abair.
We got in touch with her about the project, she liked it and she was kind enough to hook us up with her radio promotions guys, Cliff and Jason Gorov. They liked the stuff and picked See The Light off of the new project and are going to be working that single to Smooth AC (Smooth Jazz with vocals) and AC radio. We’re really hopeful that we’ll be added to a bunch of stations and that it’ll take off!
Anyway, keep your ears open, (if you listen to those types of stations) for the next few weeks; hopefully you’ll hear us!

Life So Far Musings

Life So Far is a phrase that we liked. It felt like truth to our experience. It seems that life is more a process and less an arrival at different points of achievement, although it’s that as well for sure. We’re on a journey and we know we’re not where we used to be. We know that, because we can look back at those “points of achievement” those snapshots of time, and see that we were brought through some things and now are in a better place than we were before.

Life So Far is a group of songs; pop, jazz, groove, about our particular set of life circumstances; what we saw, what we experienced, what we hoped, what we saw others experiencing on their road; not so much the best way to do them but hopefully always redemptively.

It seems that there’s a sense of timing about the new BlissBliss website and project for us. We’ve been waiting to see a number of things come together on a number of different fronts for a number of years. One of the things we’ve learned over the past few months is that it was really, up to us all along. Okay, a large dose of remorse later, we feel very excited and empowered; better late than never!
